For anyone starting over, starting late, or tired of paying for promises a bottle can't keep. A routine doesn't get better by getting longer. It gets better when every step has a reason.

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid
SkinCeuticalsUpheld
The most famous vitamin C serum in the room. A daytime antioxidant to wear under sunscreen.
It doesn't replace SPF. Pure vitamin C can sting on sensitive or freshly exfoliated skin, so patch test first.
Used by the editor.
Price at Dermstore Paid link
How to use
Follow its directions. SkinCeuticals says to apply C E Ferulic in the morning after cleansing and toning, before your other skincare, and to finish with sunscreen. If you're new to both exfoliating toners and vitamin C, introduce them separately, not together.

The order I use, morning and night
Here's my order. Adjust it to your skin.
What Made the Cut
1. Cleanse
Keep cleansing gentle: the job is to remove the day, not to make skin squeak. In the evening, be thorough, so makeup and sunscreen come off completely.
More on cleansing
If your skin starts to feel dry, tight, or irritated, switch to a gentler cleanser or cleanse less often. If skin feels raw or stings, read Barrier Support first. A cleansing milk such as Lait VIP O2 removes makeup too, so you don't need a separate makeup-removal step.

Biologique RechercheUpheld
Biologique Recherche Lait VIP O2
A cleansing milk for the face.
“I love how hydrating Lait VIP O2 feels. I apply it to dry skin before my shower, then rinse.”

CeraVeConditional
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
An affordable, gentle cleanser for step one.
- What to check
- It won't lather much, and that's by design. If you wear heavy makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, you may want a separate first cleanse.

Evidence & details
Face cleanser for normal to dry skin · 19 fl oz · CeraVe says it contains three ceramides and hyaluronic acid · Free of added fragrance · Non-comedogenic (Amazon listing)
- The Claim
- CeraVe says it “washes away dirt, excess oil, and impurities without stripping skin of its natural oils or leaving it feeling tight and dry.”
- The Evidence
- A cleanser is on your skin for under a minute, so its job is to clean without leaving skin tight. CeraVe's formula is a low-foam lotion with glycerin and ceramides, and no added fragrance.
- Who it's for
- Someone with normal to dry skin who wants a simple, inexpensive cleanser that doesn't leave skin feeling tight.
Conditional: the 19 fl oz size and specs are from the Amazon listing, not yet verified on CeraVe's own page. The shop link opens Amazon. Listing checked Oct 16, 2026.
2. Toner
It's optional, and not a beginner's must.
The brand also says not to use it on irritated skin or during a treatment with retinoic acid, to keep it away from the eyes, and to avoid sun exposure right after applying it.

Biologique RechercheUpheld
Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 PIGM 400
An exfoliating lotion for uneven-looking tone. Exfoliation and brightening only pay off alongside daily sunscreen.
Price at Karina NYC Paid link
Used by the editor.
How to use
Introduce it gradually and follow the product's directions. For the first week, Biologique Recherche says to apply it with a damp cotton pad, dabbing it over the face, neck, and décolleté with upward strokes; after that, with a cotton pad soaked in the toner alone. You don't need to use it morning and evening, and it shouldn't hurt: if your skin becomes irritated, stop.
Evidence & details
Exfoliating and brightening face lotion, for skin that appears dull with uneven pigmentation · 5.1 fl oz $100, 8.4 fl oz $155, 1.7 fl oz $45 (Biologique Recherche US)

3. Serum
A serum adds hydration or targets one concern, such as uneven-looking tone. Choose one for a reason.
4. Moisturize
Choose a moisturizer for how dry your skin is and how it feels: richer if it feels tight, lighter if it feels heavy.
5. Protect (morning, last)
Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning, reapplied about every two hours outdoors. Cover your neck, upper chest, and ears, and don't forget your lips: Lips, Exposed.
More on sun protection
Hats and shade count too. Sun Protection
If you notice a mole or spot that's new, changing, itching, or bleeding, see a board-certified dermatologist. A product isn't the answer to that question.

Start with how your skin feels.

- Dryness or tightness: a gentler cleanser and a richer moisturizer may feel better. Barrier Support
- Excess oil or shine: lighter textures may feel better.

- Sensitivity: stinging, flushing, or reacting to new products. Sensitivity
These often overlap, and skin can shift with seasons and with age. This is a way to choose products, not a diagnosis. For lines and firmness, see Aging; for midlife changes, The Shift.

Questions
How should I introduce something new?
One product at a time, following its directions. Patch test first: apply a little to the same small spot for several days before using it on your whole face. Give it several weeks before you judge it, and stop if your skin becomes irritated.
Do I need sunscreen indoors?
If you sit near windows or head out at all during the day, daily sunscreen is the easy habit. Ask a dermatologist about your own situation.
